Music is one of the closest things to magic many of us know. I've read that music operates through the same neural network as language. So music literally delivers a message in the same way that words deliver ideas and messages. But what is that message?
It's whatever the musician wants it to be. That is the beauty of music. Each piece is a story to be read, felt, experienced. Louis-Ferdinand Céline once said "To hell with reality! I want to die in music, not in reason or in prose. People don't deserve the restraint we show by not going into delirium in front of them. To hell with them!" While this is an inspiring thought, it doesn't seem to fit with the realities we face in daily life. Yes, music can serve as an escape from the reality around us. But whether this characteristic of music is beneficial is open for interpretation. But what interests me here is the fact that music does provide a reprieve from the burdens we all carry. And we, as a species, love our diversions. We love our escape hatches.
